The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) has opened a new chapter of leadership with a high-level engagement in Nigeria focused on advancing science, technology, and innovation as foundations for Africa’s development.
The newly elected President of the AAS, Professor Friday Okonofua, accompanied by the Academy’s Executive Director, Dr Stephen Mutwiwa, and a delegation of distinguished AAS Fellows, paid a courtesy visit to former Nigerian President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Nigeria. 

During the engagement, Chief Obasanjo reaffirmed his longstanding commitment to the AAS and pledged to continue using his influence to advocate for the Academy and mobilise support for its programmes across the continent. As President of Nigeria, Chief Obasanjo strongly supported the Academy, helping it to grow, take on major continental work. His support continues to be felt by scientists across the continent.

The discussions underscored the importance of stronger collaboration among scientists, political leaders, philanthropists, and the private sector. Chief Obasanjo emphasised that Africa’s scientific community must engage decision-makers and emerging entrepreneurs to secure the political commitment, resources, and partnerships required to translate research and innovation into tangible improvements in people’s lives. He further assured the AAS leadership of his commitment to advocating for the AAS in every for a possible.

The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss the forthcoming 16th AAS Scientific Conference and General Assembly, scheduled for 12–15 December 2026 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Chief Obasanjo expressed his willingness to support and participate in this important continental gathering. 
As the AAS enters this new leadership under Prof Okonofua, it will continue strengthening the connections between scientific excellence, public policy, investment, and Africa’s development priorities. Professor Okonofua brings extensive scientific and institutional leadership experience to the presidency of the Academy.
The Academy deeply appreciates Chief Obasanjo’s enduring friendship, leadership and commitment to positioning science, technology and innovation at the centre of Africa’s future.
