The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) congratulates Prof Laila Mandi, a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (FAAS), on receiving the prestigious GAÏA Environment Award during the 2026 edition of the International Water and Sanitation Exhibition (SITeau) held in Marrakech.
According to Cadi Ayyad University, Prof Mandi was recognised for her outstanding scientific contributions and leadership in environmental research, particularly in the fields of water resource management, wastewater treatment, sanitation, and sustainable development.
Prof Mandi is a renowned environmental microbiologist and researcher whose work has significantly advanced ecological sustainability and public health across Africa and globally. Through decades of research and innovation, she has contributed to developing environmentally sustainable approaches to wastewater reuse, water quality monitoring, and integrated water management solutions, particularly in water-scarce regions.
Her scientific leadership has also played an important role in promoting environmental resilience and supporting evidence-based policies aimed at improving access to safe water and sanitation systems. Beyond research, Prof Mandi has mentored numerous young scientists and strengthened scientific collaboration across Africa and internationally.
As a Fellow of the AAS, Prof Mandi exemplifies the Academy’s commitment to recognising excellence in science, innovation, and leadership that address Africa’s pressing development challenges.
