AAS Fellow Dr Rita Orji Appointed to UN Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence

The African Academy of Sciences congratulates Dr Rita Orji, a leading computer scientist and Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (FAAS), on her appointment to the United Nations’ newly established Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence. Her selection places her among 40 globally recognized experts tasked with shaping the future of AI governance and ensuring its responsible and equitable development.

Dr Orji’s work will focus on advancing human-centred, inclusive, and responsible AI, with particular attention to underserved communities and the Global South—areas that have defined her research and advocacy throughout her career.

Established by the UN General Assembly in August 2025, the Scientific Panel on AI is a landmark global initiative designed to provide independent, evidence-based guidance on the opportunities, risks, and societal impacts of artificial intelligence. Selected from more than 2,600 candidates, the panel brings together a geographically diverse and gender-balanced group of experts to inform global dialogue on AI governance.

Dr Orji’s appointment reflects her extensive contributions at the intersection of artificial intelligence and human behaviour. As the Canada Research Chair in Persuasive Technology and Director of the Persuasive Computing Lab, she has pioneered research on AI-driven persuasive systems, culturally adaptive technologies, and digital health interventions. Her work emphasizes how AI systems can be designed to positively influence behaviour while remaining ethical, inclusive, and contextually relevant.

Her recognition also underscores the AAS mandate to identify and elevate excellence in science. As a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, Dr Orji exemplifies the Academy’s commitment to supporting researchers whose work delivers meaningful global impact. Her voice on this influential UN panel ensures that African perspectives and priorities are represented in shaping international AI policy.
