Honouring Excellence: AAS Welcomes 70 Newly Elected Fellows

The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) is thrilled to announce the election of 70 distinguished scholars to its Fellowship, joining a legacy of scientific excellence and leadership across the continent. These individuals have been selected through a rigorous, merit-based nomination and peer-review process that recognises outstanding achievement and lasting contributions to science, technology, innovation, and scholarship in Africa and globally.

The newly elected Fellows represent a broad range of academic disciplines spanning the Academy’s ten scientific clusters, reflecting the richness and diversity of Africa’s research landscape—from health sciences, agricultural and environmental research, and engineering, to the social sciences and humanities. Their election affirms both their individual contributions and their shared dedication to using science and scholarship to drive progress and improve lives in Africa and beyond.

AAS Fellows are recognized for their outstanding contributions to the advancement of science and their role in shaping policies that drive sustainable development across the continent. The election of these 70 new Fellows expands the Academy’s network of leading scientists, enhancing its capacity to foster knowledge-sharing, mentorship, and collaboration to drive impactful research in Africa.

Prof Lise Korsten AAS President says “It is a great honour to welcome this new cohort of distinguished scientists and scholars into the AAS Fellowship. Their achievements, dedication, and vision reflect the very best of African excellence. Each Fellow brings unique expertise that will play a critical role in strengthening the continent’s scientific capacity and advancing our shared goals. As an Academy, we remain steadfast in our commitment to championing science, technology, and innovation as drivers of sustainable growth and transformative impact across Africa.”

The newly elected Fellows include fourteen (14) Associate Fellows, fifty-six (56) Fellows, with a gender distribution of sixteen (16) female and fifty-four (54) male scholars.
