The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) has launched the Editorial Board/Planning Committee that will guide the establishment of its proposed scientific journal. At its inaugural virtual meeting on 17 September 2026, members agreed that the time is right for an African-led journal that brings research from across the continent to wider audiences.

Chaired by Prof. Malik Maaza, the Committee brings together expertise from a range of scientific disciplines and publishing backgrounds. Members discussed how the journal could combine rigorous editorial standards with a distinctive focus on research that speaks to Africa’s priorities and contributes to global scientific debate.

AAS President Prof. Friday Okonofua welcomed the Committee and encouraged it to move swiftly towards a clear journal concept and an ambitious, practical launch plan. The meeting considered draft Terms of Reference and a 12-month work plan. Members will now review the proposed timetable, help shape the journal’s scope and identify leads for work on editorial governance, publishing systems, sustainability, partnerships and visibility.

The meeting brought together Prof. Okonofua, Prof. Maaza and the Committee’s Managing Secretary, Dr. James Mushori, alongside Prof. Olorunseun Ogunwobi, Prof. Fengting Li, Prof. Oualid Hamdaoui, Prof. Cynthia Amaning Danquah, Dr. Felicitas Esnart Mukumbo, Dr. Judicaël Obame, Prof. Ngianga-Bakwin Kandala, Prof. Asfawossen Kassaye, Dr. Dickson Amugsi, Prof. Donald Kugonza, Dr. Nowsheen Goonoo and Prof. Olukayode Amund.

The Committee’s first priorities include consulting AAS Fellows on a name for the journal, examining the scholarly publishing landscape and exploring potential publishing partnerships. These steps mark the beginning of a collective effort to build a credible and sustainable platform for African science.
