The African Academy of Sciences is catalysing science diplomacy in Africa
Science can best flourish in an open and safe ecosystem that encourages the free flow of ideas. Today scientists face increasing and multifaceted threats, triggered either by personal characteristics, their choice of research or the context in which they find themselves. It is against this backdrop that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established a new programme and launched a call to action to promote scientific freedom and the safety of scientists.
On 11 July, the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) participated in a webinar in response to the UNESCO Call to Action on the Freedom and Safety of Scientists. Dr Peggy Oti-Boateng Executive Director of the AAS highlighted the crucial role science diplomacy plays in addressing global challenges, particularly in Africa.
Science Diplomacy: A Catalyst for Africa's Development
The continent faces complex issues like climate change, food insecurity, and poverty, which demand collaborative solutions. Science diplomacy empowers nations to harness the power of scientific knowledge and cooperation to tackle these challenges and drive sustainable development.
AAS is uniquely positioned to promote science diplomacy by fostering partnerships between scientists and policymakers across the continent. AAS can leverage its extensive network of researchers and its deep understanding of African scientific challenges to bridge the gap between research and policy.
AAS facilitates international science cooperation by connecting scientists from different African countries with their counterparts globally. These collaborations leads to knowledge sharing, capacity building, and joint research projects, enhancing scientific progress and contributing to broader development goals.
By effectively harnessing the power of science diplomacy, AAS contributes to achieving its overarching goal of transforming lives through science. This involves fostering a scientific environment that prioritizes innovation, collaboration, and the application of scientific knowledge to address Africa's most pressing challenges.
