Professor Rajeev Varshney recognised for globally important research

The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) Fellow Professor Rajeev Varshney was recognised as a global research leader in the 2023 list of Highly Cited Researchers by Clarivate. The list recognises influential researchers at universities, research institutes and commercial organizations around the world who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their field of research. It is the 10th time since 2014 that Prof Varshney has made the list.

Of the world’s population of scientists and social scientists, Highly Cited Researchers are one in 1,000, selected for their exceptional performance in one or more of 21 broad fields and having demonstrated significant influence through publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade.

Their names are drawn from the publications that rank in the top one per cent by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science citation index.

Professor Varshney is a global leader in crop genomics leading a team at the Centre for Crop and Food Innovation that is solving the world’s food security problems as we head towards a future impacted by climate change. Recently he received 2023 Crop Science Research Award from the Crop Science Society of America for her research contributions in international agriculture.

Bar Veinstein, President of Academia & Government at Clarivate said: “We celebrate the Highly Cited Researchers whose contributions transform our world by helping to make it healthier, more sustainable and more secure. Recognition of Highly Cited Researchers not only validates research excellence but also enhances reputation, fosters collaboration, and informs resource allocation, acting as a beacon for academic institutions and commercial organizations.”

An exceptionally high citation record is a mark of a researcher’s influence and acknowledgement of their important foundational work, on which they and others are building further research. The annual Highly Cited list is considered the world’s foremost authoritative collection.
