In a dynamic convergence of scientific minds, the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) actively participated in the Science Forum South Africa, held in Pretoria from 6-8 December 2023. This gathering brought together over 1,500 participants, fostering discussions on the pivotal role of science in society. The theme, "Igniting Conversations About Science – People, Partnerships, Priorities for the Decadal Plan," set the stage for a diverse exploration of ideas.
As part of this forum, the AAS hosted a compelling session on Science Transformation. Under the insightful guidance of Professor Lise Korsten, President of the AAS, and Professor Kenneth Ozoemena, Vice President Southern Africa AAS, the session delved into the collaborative efforts necessary for shared equipment platforms and networks. 
The global trend towards open knowledge and infrastructure sharing was a central focus. The urgency of aligning African researchers with international expertise and facilities was underscored. The session highlighted the need for political action, driven by informed scientific perspectives, to address anthropogenic processes.
A key theme discussed was the role of the scientific community in collaborative endeavors, specifically in areas like the archival of molecular samples and sharing infrastructure, including biobanks. These were identified as "future-making and memory institutions," crucial for maintaining the integrity, authenticity, and availability of molecular samples and associated data.
Consortiums and significant equipment platforms/networks have already been established, providing valuable access, training, and collaborative research incentives. The forum aimed to explore potential networks and initiatives that could further support capacity development and infrastructure sharing, ultimately enhancing African Science Excellence.
The event marked a significant step towards fostering collaboration and dialogue, laying the groundwork for future advancements in African scientific endeavors.
