Berhanu Shiferaw

Berhanu Shiferaw was elected as an AAS Fellow in 2017. As a fellow, Berhanu Shiferaw contributes to the development of the Academy’s strategic direction through participation in AAS activities and governance structures. . This gears the Academys vision of transforming african lives through science.

Bio

Shiferaw Berhanu is a Professor of Mathematics at Temple University. He is one of the founders of the  PhD program in mathematics that was launched by AAU. In 2012, in joint work with Ming Xiao, they resolved an important 20 year-old conjecture of X. Huang in Several Complex Variables. Their work has inspired major advances and the resolutions of other longstanding conjectures in CR Geometry. He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and an Associate Fellow of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences. Berhanu has recruited eighteen students from Ethiopia who all completed their Ph.Ds at Temple University. He was the founder of the Ph.D. program in mathematics that was launched by the AAU in Ethiopia and has helped establish two other Ph.D. programs in Ethiopia.
