Balirwa Stephen John was elected as an AAS Fellow in 2009. As a fellow, Balirwa Stephen John contributes to the development of the Academy’s strategic direction through participation in AAS activities and governance structures. . This gears the Academys vision of transforming african lives through science.

Bio

Dr. Balirwa was educated at the University of Dar Es Salaam where he obtained his B.Sc. in 1970, M.Sc. in 1984. He left for the Netherlands and obtained M.Sc. in 1992 and PhD in 1998 at Wageningen Agricultural University. He has served as Tsetse Officer at the Ministry of Animal resources, Research Officer at EAFFRO, Scientific Officer, Senior Research Officer, and Principal Research Officer of UFFRO and FIRI, Director at FIRRI. Presently he is Director of research at NaFIRRI. His research interests are in Fish and fisheries biology and aquatic ecology, wetlands, riverine ecology, biodiversity conservation, environmental impact assessments and water quality (limnology). He is member of several professional societies and Scientific Institutions and has received different recognitions. He has 45 technical publications.
