Van Der Walt Andries Johannes

Professor Van der Walt was a leading international scholar, particularly in the field of Constitutional Property Law. His seminal work, *Constitutional Property Law* (3rd edition, 2011), was prescribed for a final-year course at Harvard Law School from September 2006. In 2012, he was invited as the only South African scholar among sixteen academics from around the world to teach and supervise an international doctoral programme on Globalisation and Legal Theory, presented jointly by the Universities of Kiel, Glasgow, Antwerp, and Tilburg.

In 2013, he was one of only four South Africans invited by the Dean of Harvard Law School to attend and speak at an event honoring Professor Frank I. Michelman, one of the three most-cited legal scholars in the United States. The other South African invitees included two former Chief Justices and the then Chief Justice of South Africa.

In 2014, Professor Van der Walt became the first—and remained the only—non-United States scholar to receive the Merit Award of the international Association for Law, Property and Society (ALPS). His scholarly work was cited extensively in South African legal literature and court decisions from 1984 onward. Significant judicial citations included landmark judgments of the Constitutional Court of South Africa and the Supreme Court of Appeal. His work also received substantial international recognition through citations in books and academic journals published in the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Australia.

Among his many distinctions, Professor Van der Walt was a Member of the Academy of Science of South Africa and a Fellow of the Royal Society of South Africa. Through his scholarship, teaching, and intellectual leadership, he made an enduring contribution to legal theory, constitutional jurisprudence, and property law, both in South Africa and internationally.
