Portrait of Pillay Viness

Biography

Professor Viness Pillay was a distinguished pharmaceutical scientist and innovator whose contributions to drug delivery research had a profound impact on healthcare in Africa and around the world.

He obtained his Master of Pharmacy degree, graduating cum laude, from the University of Durban-Westville, South Africa, in 1996. He later completed his PhD at Temple University in the United States as a Fulbright Scholar in 2000. Throughout his career, Professor Pillay established himself as a global leader in pharmaceutical sciences and advanced drug delivery technologies.

He served as the South African National Research Foundation Chair in Pharmaceutical Biomaterials and Polymer-Engineered Drug Delivery Technologies, Personal Professor of Pharmaceutics, and Executive Director of the Wits Advanced Drug Delivery Platform (WADDP). Under his leadership, the WADDP received support from the Technology Innovation Agency, the Medical Research Council, the National Research Foundation, and several other prestigious funding organizations. The platform focused on developing innovative and commercializable drug delivery technologies designed to overcome limitations of existing pharmaceutical products and address major public health challenges in Africa and globally.

Professor Pillay was widely recognized as a pioneer of drug delivery research on the African continent. In recognition of his groundbreaking work, he was awarded a Centre of Excellence designation by the African Network for Drugs and Diagnostics Innovation in Advanced Drug Delivery Technology. He was a member of several prestigious professional and scientific bodies, including the Academy of Science of South Africa, the American Chemical Society, the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, the New York Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences of South Africa, and The Biomaterials Network.

Prior to his leadership at WADDP, he served as Associate Professor of Pharmaceutics at Florida A&M University in the United States. His research there led to the granting of a United States patent for the development of a monolithic controlled-release tablet, which was subsequently licensed to a pharmaceutical company and benefited patients around the world.

A prolific scholar and inventor, Professor Pillay authored more than 100 scientific publications and over 10 book chapters, and was the inventor of more than 25 filed Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) patents. He was also the visionary behind the RapiDiss Wafer technology, an innovative platform designed for the treatment of infectious diseases in pediatric patients.

Through his scientific excellence, innovation, and commitment to improving global health, Professor Viness Pillay left a lasting legacy in pharmaceutical research, drug delivery science, and healthcare innovation.
