Post-Trump, African science pivots to new partners

The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) has partnered with the European Research Council (ERC) to counteract US cuts, and looks to rebuild bridges to other funders Late last month the AAS signed an agreement with the ERC that will allow African researchers to temporarily join teams led by ERC grantees.  The agreement is based on the Academy’s African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence (ARISE) Pilot Programme, a €25 million research and innovation exchange programme funded by the EU and the African Union.  The AAS, which numbers around 600 fellows from across the continent, is hoping this agreement and others will cushion the abrupt US withdrawal from African research.
