New Interim Executive Director takes the helm at the African Academy of Sciences

The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) announces that Dr. Peggy Oti-Boateng will conclude her three-year term as Executive Director on 31 October 2025. We extend our deep appreciation to Dr. Oti-Boateng for her leadership and her many contributions to the progress of the Academy.

To ensure continuity and smooth operations while the AAS Governing Council completes recruitment for a new Executive Director, the Governing Council has appointed Professor Jane Catherine Ngila as Interim Executive Director, effective Monday, 15 September 2025. Prof. Ngila will lead the day-to-day management of the Academy during this transitional period. All programmes, grants, and services will proceed without interruption.

Prof. Ngila previously served as Acting Executive Director of AAS from 2020 - 2022 and is a sitting member of the Governing Council. She is a distinguished chemical scientist with a strong record of academic excellence, leadership, and service across the African science community.

The Governing Council looks forward to working with Prof. Ngila as she steers the Academy through this transition period and remains committed to strengthening the AAS as a pan-African driver of science, technology, and innovation.

We are confident that under Prof. Ngila’s capable leadership, the Academy will continue its mission—to recognise excellence, inform science policy, build capacity, and implement high-impact programmes across Africa. The Governing Council looks forward to her stewardship over the coming period.
