Join former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo for an AAS dialogue on science, leadership and Africa’s future

How can Africa turn its scientific talent into solutions that improve lives, strengthen economies and shape the continent’s future? Join the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, from 5:00 p.m. East Africa Time for an online conversation with H.E. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The dialogue will explore the theme “Science, Leadership and Africa’s Development: Reflections on the Future of the Continent.” It will examine challenges and opportunities around scientific investment, political leadership and Africa’s development into a conversation that invites participation from across the continent and beyond.

Connecting science with the decisions that shape Africa

AAS is working with African scientists and innovators to develop knowledge and solutions to pressing challenges in health, food security, climate change, energy and education. Yet turning that expertise into public policy, investment and tangible benefits for communities remains a critical task.

Drawing on his experience in national leadership and African affairs, Chief Obasanjo will reflect on the choices that can help the continent move from consuming knowledge and technology to becoming a stronger producer of both. The discussion will consider lessons from his presidency and what they mean for the next generation of African leaders.

Moderated by Professor Oladele Ogunseitan, the conversation will explore how governments can make better use of scientific evidence, how businesses can invest more actively in research and innovation, and how African institutions can create opportunities for young scientists and entrepreneurs.

An opportunity to put your questions to a former head of state

The session will include an audience question and answer segment, offering AAS Fellows and participants an opportunity to put questions to Chief Obasanjo.

For researchers and innovators the conversation offers a chance to explore how evidence can reach decision-makers. For policymakers and business leaders, it will examine the conditions needed for science and innovation to support development. For students and early-career scientists, it will open a discussion on the mentorship, funding and leadership support needed to turn ideas into practical solutions.

Dr Nkem Khumbah, AAS Director, STI Policy, Governance & Partnerships, will deliver the opening remarks, followed by welcome remarks from Professor Friday Okonofua, AAS President. Professor Peter Okebukola, former Executive Secretary of Nigeria’s National Universities Commission, will introduce Chief Obasanjo and later join Professor Catherine Ngila in reflecting on the discussion’s key takeaways.

Be part of the conversation

The AAS invites scientists, policymakers, entrepreneurs, development partners, students and everyone interested in Africa’s future to join this timely exchange.
