African Academy of Sciences Appoints Dr. Stephen Mutwiwa as Executive Director

NAIROBI, KENYA – The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) has appointed Dr. Stephen Mutwiwa as its new Executive Director. A Kenyan physician and public health expert, Dr. Mutwiwa brings over 20 years of experience in global health and scientific leadership to the pan-African institution.
His appointment comes as Africa increasingly prioritizes science, technology, and innovation (STI) to drive economic transformation and climate resilience. As Executive Director, Dr. Mutwiwa will lead the Academy’s mission to strengthen Africa’s research ecosystem, mentor emerging scientific leaders, and ensure African research informs continental policy.
A Vision for Continental Excellence Professor Lise Korsten, President of the AAS, welcomed the appointment: "Dr. Mutwiwa brings deep expertise in health systems and research partnerships. His leadership will strengthen the Academy’s role as a continental platform for scientific excellence and a trusted advisor for Africa’s future."
Reflecting on his new role, Dr. Mutwiwa stated: "The AAS is vital in bridging the gap between research and development. I look forward to working with our Fellows and partners to ensure that African innovation contributes meaningfully to sustainable development across the continent."
About Dr. Stephen Mutwiwa Dr. Mutwiwa has spent his career at the intersection of science and policy. Most recently, he led a multi-year women’s health initiative in Rwanda and previously served as Country Director for Jhpiego in both Kenya and Rwanda. In these roles, he managed extensive portfolios covering HIV, malaria, and health systems strengthening in collaboration with national governments and international donors.
An active mentor, Dr. Mutwiwa has supervised researchers at the University of Nairobi and the Great Lakes University of Kisumu. His own research widely published in peer reviewed journals focuses on maternal health, family planning, and health system resilience.
He holds an MD and MPH from the University of Nairobi and a PhD in Health Systems Research from the Great Lakes University of Kisumu. He is also a Fellow of the Global Health Leadership Executive Programme at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
