Dr. Wael Mamdouh is a Professor of Chemistry and Nanotechnology at the American University in Cairo (AUC) and leads the Biomedical Polymer Nanocomposites, Hydrogels, and Tissue Engineering research group. He earned his MSc and PhD in Chemistry and Nanotechnology from the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. At AUC, he teaches chemistry and nanotechnology courses and supervises over 60 students, collaborating with universities in Egypt, and internationally in Denmark, Malaysia, Italy, and Portugal.
His research focuses on developing advanced polymer composites, nanoparticles, and nanofibers for biomedical applications, including drug delivery systems, cosmeceuticals, antibacterial membranes and wound dressings, and tissue engineering scaffolds. His team also works on conjugated nanoparticles for breast cancer treatment and antibacterial solutions for gastrointestinal issues. Dr. Mamdouh's research has led to numerous publications, U.S. patents, and over 6,000 citations.
Dr. Mamdouh founded NANOFIBTECH, a startup aimed at translating scientific research into commercial products. The company specializes in natural liquid disinfectants, targeted drug delivery systems for cancer treatment, and green nanotechnology solutions for various sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, and water treatment. His achievements include winning the NINJA Business Plan Competition by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), where he was recognized as one of the top 69 startups in Africa.
In addition to his research, Dr. Mamdouh has been a panel judge, keynote speaker, and invited speaker at national and international conferences. He has also served as a reviewer for prestigious research organizations such as The Binational Fulbright Commission in Egypt and EPSRC (UK). Dr. Mamdouh’s success in translating research into market-ready solutions and his contributions to innovation and entrepreneurship have earned him global recognition.
