Prof. Sospeter Muhongo is a highly distinguished Tanzanian geologist, academic, and politician who has made significant contributions to earth sciences and public service in Africa. Born on June 25, 1954, he built a world-class academic career as a Professor of Geology at the University of Dar es Salaam and earned a doctorate from the Technical University of Berlin. Over the decades, he has published more than 200 research papers, co-edited the Journal of African Earth Sciences, and held prestigious fellowships with global institutions like the Geological Society of London. His global leadership in science policy includes serving as the founding Regional Director for Africa at the International Council for Science (ICSU) and being elected to the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) Governing Council.
In 2012, Muhongo transitioned into politics when President Jakaya Kikwete appointed him as a Member of Parliament and named him Minister of Energy and Minerals. Known for his technical expertise and data-driven approach, he was tasked with managing Tanzania's booming natural gas and mineral discoveries. However, his political tenure was turbulent; he resigned in 2015 following the Tegeta Escrow corruption scandal, though he vehemently denied any wrongdoing. He bounced back later that year by winning the Musoma Rural parliamentary seat and was reappointed to the same ministerial docket by President John Magufuli, a position he held until 2017. He remains an active legislator in the Tanzanian Parliament, frequently using his scientific background to advocate for research, sustainable agriculture, and technical innovation.
