Professor Najet Srairi-Abid was elected as an AAS Fellow in 2023. As a fellow, Professor Najet Srairi-Abid contributes to the development of the Academy's strategic direction through participation in AAS activities and governance structures. This gears the Academy's vision of transforming African lives through science.
Professor Najet Srairi-Abid primed a research project since 1993 as an engineer in purification and sequencing of scorpion venom peptides in Pasteur Institute of Tunisia. She successfully linked the bridge between chemistry and biology in the laboratory to better characterize animal venom molecules. After her PHD in 2001, she conducted study on the discovery and the characterization of bioactive molecules from animal venoms as well as their valorization for their therapeutic potential. She had enjoying the luxury of investigating the interaction modes of the biological systems at the molecular levels, which requires the usage of integrative approaches including molecular modeling and docking. She has led the team "drug discovery and drug design" in the laboratory of venoms and therapeutic biomolecules since 2016. She has trained generations of students and post docs and has contributed to collaborative research with teams in Noth Africa, Europe and Asia, through many national and international grant projects. Her wide experience in animal venom molecules biology allowed her to have more than a hundred of scientific papers published in prestigious scientific journals, and sought to be reviewer, editorial boarding member or guest editor by many scientific journals. She is now a head of laboratory of biomolecules, Venoms and Theranostic Applications at Pasteur Institute of Tunisia.
