Musa Toyin Yakubu was elected as an AAS Fellow in 2025. As a fellow, Musa Toyin Yakubu contributes to the development of the Academy's strategic direction through participation in AAS activities and governance structures. This gears the Academy's vision of transforming African lives through science.
Musa Toyin Yakubu had all his university education at University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria (1988-2006). He started his academic career as an Assistant Lecturer in the same University in 1999 and became a Professor of Biochemistry in 2014. He directed his research into unlocking the barriers to sexual and reproductive dysfunction for sustainable livelihood by unravelling the most potent fractions/bioactive agents and biochemical/molecular mechanisms by which these indigenous/African medicinal plants reverse sexual dysfunction and other gynaecological problems. Specifically, he has demonstrated that Augustine, 6-hydroxylbuphanidrine and 6-hydroundulatine from Brysocarpus coccineus roots via enhanced serotonin-reuptake and altered neurotransmitter and hormonal levels were responsible for aphrodisiac activity in paroxetine-induced sexual dysfunction male rat model. In addition, apigenin and luteolin in Senna alata leaves, 8-hydroxycolumbin in Chasmanthera dependens roots, lophirones B and C from Lophirone alata stem bark via Keap1-Nrf-2 pathway, and 1, 3, 8-trihydroxy-6-methylan thraquinone from S. alata flower were responsible for the abortifacient, male fertility
restorative, anticancer and anti-diabetic activities, respectively. He has also substantiated the folkloric uses of Uvaria chamae roots, Parquetina nigresence leaves and combination of Tetraplera tetraptera, Olax subscopiodea and Securidaca longipedunculata for anti-hyperprolactinemic, anti-polycystic ovarian syndrome and anti-obesity activities. He has published over 200
research articles in highly reputable national and international journals and presented over 60 papers at local and international conferences. Prof. Yakubu has provided leadership by successfully mentoring 37 doctoral graduates. He is a recipient of several awards and grants. He has served as the Sub-Dean and Dean, Student Affairs Unit, Head of Department of Biochemistry and Director of the Central Research Laboratories. He is a member of several academic bodies and Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Nigerian Society for Experimental Biology, the Nigerian Academy of Science and the African Academy of Sciences.
