Biography

The late Professor Makawiti had vast experience in teaching Biochemistry to both undergraduate and postgraduate students of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing, Agriculture and Science. He has supervised over 20 postgraduate theses (PhD and MSc) and has served as guest lecturer and external examiner for theses examination or for the assessment of staff for promotion in the following Universities: University of Addis Ababa, University of Dar-es-Salaam, Egerton University, University of Ghana, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenyatta University, Lagos State University, Makerere University, Moi University, University of Nigeria-Nsukka, Sokoine University and University of Zimbabwe. As a researcher, he has interest in Biochemical Endocrinology with emphasis on (a) Steroid hormones, their metabolites, techniques of identification and quantification, and use in prediction and detection of ovulation and prediction of parturition. (b) Natural products of plant origin involved in fertility regulation. (c) Effect of trypanosomosis on the host endocrine function. (d) Nutritional bioenergetics. (e) The impact of anti- retrovirals on the endocrine function. He holds the Head of State Commendation (HSC) awarded by His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Kenya.
