Professor George A. O. Magoha was a distinguished surgeon, academic leader, and medical educator who made significant contributions to higher education, clinical practice, and health system leadership in Kenya and internationally.

He served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi and was a Professor of Surgery and Consultant Urologist at the College of Health Sciences, University of Nairobi. He also held prominent leadership positions, including Chairman of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board and Chairman of the Kenya Association of Urological Surgeons (KAUS).

Born in 1952, Professor Magoha received his early education in Yala and Nairobi before attending Starehe Boys Centre and Strathmore School for his secondary education in Kenya. He later studied Medicine at the University of Lagos. He pursued specialist training in Surgery and Urology at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, University College Hospital Ibadan, the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland, and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School at Hammersmith Hospital in London. During this period, he received several academic awards in recognition of his excellence. He also undertook executive management training at Stanford University in the United States.

Professor Magoha began his medical career at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, where he served as an intern and rose through the ranks to Senior Resident and Clinical Lecturer in Surgery. He also served as an Honorary Lecturer and Consultant Surgeon in several leading hospitals in Lagos, Nigeria.

He joined the University of Nairobi in 1988 as a Lecturer in Urological Surgery and rose through the academic ranks to become Full Professor of Surgery in 2000. He held numerous senior administrative positions at the university, including Chair of the Department of Surgery in 1999, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine in 2000, Principal of the College of Health Sciences in 2001, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration and Finance in 2002, and later Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi.

In addition to his academic leadership, he served as an Honorary Consultant Surgeon and Urologist at Kenyatta National Hospital and was President of the Association of African Universities (AAU). He was also a member of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences.

Professor Magoha authored more than 51 peer-reviewed publications and supervised over 40 Master of Medicine (Surgery) students to completion. His research interests included male erectile dysfunction, prostate, testicular and penile cancers, circumcision, and HIV/AIDS. He was actively involved in clinical research and medical advancement in these fields.

Throughout his career, he was a member of numerous professional bodies in surgery and urology and received many international and national honors and awards, including the Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS) and Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS).

He was married to Dr. Barbara O. Magoha, and together they had a son, Dr. Michael Magoha. Through his leadership, scholarship, and service, Professor George A. O. Magoha left a lasting legacy in medicine, medical education, and institutional leadership in Africa.
