Professor Isoken Henrietta Igbinosa is a distinguished scholar in the Department of Environmental Management and Toxicology at the University of Benin, Nigeria. Her research expertise encompasses water and wastewater quality, antimicrobial resistance, applied and environmental microbiology, foodborne and waterborne pathogens, molecular epidemiology, and forensic toxicology. She has made pioneering contributions to the understanding of antibiotic resistance transmission in environmental reservoirs—particularly aquatic systems—highlighting the public health threats posed by emerging microbial contaminants. Her influential work on the surveillance of multidrug-resistant bacteria in wastewater has played a pivotal role in informing public health policies related to water safety and microbial risk assessment. Additionally, she is at the forefront of innovative research exploring the application of nanotechnology for smart water quality monitoring, assessment, and management.
Professor Igbinosa is a recipient of several prestigious fellowships, scholarships, and awards. These include selection for the Third US-Africa Frontiers of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Symposium; the Keystone Symposia Global Health Travel Award for her participation in the symposium on Leveraging Genomic Diversity to Promote Animal and Human Health; a Fellowship with the Africa Science Leadership Programme (ASLP) at the University of Pretoria, South Africa; and her status as an Affiliate Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS).
As a Principal Investigator, she has successfully secured and led high-impact research projects funded by reputable bodies such as the International Foundation for Science (IFS) and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). Her academic influence extends far beyond her own institution—she has served as an external examiner for MSc and PhD theses at several international universities, actively contributing to the training and mentoring of the next generation of scientists. She has also spearheaded numerous collaborative research initiatives with leading institutions across Africa, Europe, and the United States, thereby advancing the global knowledge base in environmental science and public health.
Professor Igbinosa is a regular peer reviewer for several high-impact national, regional, and international journals. Her scholarly output is both prolific and impactful, with over 70 high-quality publications in top-tier, peer-reviewed international journals.
