Biography

Hanadi Salem is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering since 2020. 
She is the First Elected Chair of the University Senate since fall 2020 for 4 consecutive years 
since the establishment of the University Senate in 1993. She received her B.Sc. and M.Sc. 
degrees in Materials Science and Engineering, AUC, 1983, 87 and received her Ph.D. in 
Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Materials and Manufacturing, Texas A&M 
University, TX, 1997. 
Salem has significantly advanced the fields of materials science, nanotechnology, and additive 
manufacturing regionally and internationally. She was a co-founder of the Yousef Jameel 
Science and Technology Research Center (YJSTRC). Salem was the founder of the 
Nanotechnology Master’s Program at AUC, 2009-2010, and served as the Program Director for 
five years until 2015. She was a co-founder of the Doctorate of Science and Engineering 
program at AUC.
As the first tenured female faculty in AUC's engineering departments, she pioneered metal 
nanostructured and nanocomposite advanced processing research and their integration into 
engineering curricula and establish Egypt's first Nanotechnology Program in 2010. She founded 
Additive Manufacturing Centennial Lab (AMCL), which houses the first Wire-Arc 
Additive/Subtractive Manufacturing Integrated Robotic System in Africa and the Middle East.

Bureau for Additive Manufacturing Solutions, which positioned Egypt in the Middle East and 
North Africa in the field of advanced 3D printing technologies. An expert in Friction Stir 
Processing (FSP), Salem’s groundbreaking research has profoundly impacted aerospace 
manufacturing and contributed to the development of high-performance aluminum alloys. 
She earned her numerous awards including the AUC’s Excellence in Research and Creative 
Endeavors (2010), the ASRT CairoInnovate "Deepening of Local Industry" (2019) and the 
Alumni Distinguished Faculty Service (2023). Her contributions to research, mentorship, and 
industry collaboration have cemented her reputation as a global leader in advanced
