Guiguemde Robert Tinga
Guiguemde Robert Tinga was elected as an AAS Fellow in 2004. As a fellow, Guiguemde Robert Tinga contributes to the development of the Academy’s strategic direction through participation in AAS activities and governance structures. . This gears the Academys vision of transforming african lives through science.
Guiguemde obtained his M.Sc. from the University of Bordeaux in 1977 and is a retired Major General of the armed forces of Burkina Faso. He was the Head of Department, Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ouagadougou from 1984 – 2014 and the Dean, Faculty of Medicine, University of Bobo-Dioulasso from 2005 – 2014. Guiguemde specialises in; Tropical and parasitic diseases (malaria, dracunculiasis, schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis etc), planning, implementation and evaluation of control programs, training in medical parasitology, elaboration and implementation of research proposals and management of research teams. He is the current President of the National Academy of Sciences of Burkina Faso, the African Society of Parasitology and the Council of the Francophone African Dean of Faculties of Medicine. He is also a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences.Guiguemde has been awarded Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Bordeaux 2 (1990), the Mohamed El Fasi prize for research in tropical diseases from the Association of the Francophone Universities (1994) and the Commander of the National Order of Burkina Faso (1990).He has published 112 papers on parasitic diseases in international journals.
