Dr. Luchuo Engelbert Bain (MD, MPH, MSc-Bioethics, MBA, PhD) is a global health strategist, science communicator, and systems thinker shaping the future of health equity, governance, and knowledge production in Africa and globally. He currently serves as Head of International Programs at the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) in Nairobi, where he leads major continental partnerships, research programs, and policy influence initiatives.
With more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Bain’s work spans sexual and reproductive health and rights, community engagement, AMR and One Health, empirical bioethics, mentorship, health politics and diplomacy, and global health curriculum reform. His intellectual foundation is anchored in the belief that decolonizing global health requires persistent interrogation of knowledge, expertise, methods, power, and agenda—for whom, by whom, and with whom. His scholarship confronts epistemic injustice and advances fairer, context-grounded systems of knowledge creation and impact.
Dr. Bain is the Convener of Global Health Otherwise, a growing pan-African movement challenging outdated global health architectures and championing equity, intellectual sovereignty, and the democratization of knowledge. Under his stewardship, it has become a vibrant hub for public scholarship, critical thought, and leadership development.
He is also Co-Founder of The Career Café, a platform catalysing purpose-driven African job creation, innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership through mentorship, skills development, and career acceleration.
A sought-after advisor, keynote speaker, and board-level thought partner, Dr. Bain has provided technical expertise to the Guttmacher Institute, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, IPPF, UNFPA, WHO-TDR, the European Commission, PSI, and other global institutions. He holds academic appointments as Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Johannesburg and EUCLID University, is a Research Fellow at the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health (York University, Canada), and serves as the Inaugural Fellow for Climate Change and Health at the Geneva Learning Foundation (TGLF).
