Cloete Thomas Eugene

Cloete Thomas Eugene was elected as an AAS Fellow in 2014. As a fellow, Cloete Thomas Eugene contributes to the development of the Academy's strategic direction through participation in AAS activities and governance structures. This gears the Academy's vision of transforming African lives through science.

Biography

Prof Cloete has had an illustrious career. A record number of 100 MSc and PhD students completed their studies under his leadership. 38 of these students obtained an MSc degree in water resource management, a degree that he introduced while at the University of Pretoria.  Of his students 7 became professors and Senior Lecturers. Many of his other students hold senior leadership positions in industry and non-academic organisations and have received significant awards. He has made a major impact on the South African research landscape as acting and founder CEO of BioPAD, setting the scene for Biotechnology research in SA.   As Vice-president of the International Water Association (IWA) and Chairman of the IWA Strategic Council he gives strategic direction of the largest association of water professionals in the world.  He is currently leading a NEPAD water initiative involving a number of SA and SADC universities. Recognitions: membership in national and other academies, prizes, awards, etc Prof Cloete has received many national and international awards, including Gold medal award of the South African Academy of Sciences. He has also been recognised by the South African Water Industry for his excellence in research contribution to the sector. He is recipient of numerous Outstanding Academic Awards including from University of Pretoria, a Fellow of the International Water Association and the Southern Africa Water Institute.
