Professor Adejuwon Adewale ADENEYE is a distinguished pharmacologist with extensive expertise in natural products and complementary/alternative medicines. Holding an M.B;B.S., M.Sc., Ph.D., and D.Sc.(AM), his academic journey is marked by significant international training and numerous accolades, including the Fulbright Junior Scholar Award and the AU-TWAS Best Young Scientist National Award.
His research primarily focuses on identifying and evaluating therapeutic compounds from local medicinal plants, particularly for non-communicable diseases like diabetes mellitus, obesity, and hyperlipidemia that are considered critical public health issues. A notable achievement is his discovery of erinidine, a novel antihyperglycemic molecule derived from the Nigerian plant Hunteria umbellata. He was among the research team that first established the mechanistic model of the Implantable Closed-loop Blood Glucose Monitoring and Activity-Based Insulin Infusion Pump System, famously known as the "Artificial Pancreas Delivery System." This foundational work remains the mechanistic model for the Closed-Loop Automated Blood Glucose Monitoring and Insulin Infusion Systems currently in clinical use, a testament to his visionary impact.
Professor Adeneye's prolific career includes 97 research publications, a patent, and four books and chapters. His substantial academic impact is reflected in a Google Scholar h-index of 36, i10 index of 80, and citations of 4760 citations. He is a Foundation Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (Nigeria), Nigerian Academy of Medicine, and a Distinguished Fellow of the African Principal Conference Initiative (APCI), and a Visiting Research Scholar at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky, U.S.A. Professor Adejuwon ADENEYE is a recipient of the 2025 Africa Outstanding Professors Award (an initiative of the Africa Brands Review & APCI). He has also supervised numerous M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses. Currently, he directs the Lagos State University Directorate of Research Management and Innovation, driving the institution's research initiatives.
