Overview
Neuroscience is rapidly evolving, with innovative neurotechnologies shaping how we understand and treat brain-related conditions. However, ethical concerns surrounding these technologies, particularly in Africa, remain underexplored. This workshop is based on a research study that seeks to understand the unique ethical challenges of neuroscience in Africa. It is important that Africans (and all people) ensure that neurotechnological advancements being introduced align with the cultural, social, and economic realities of people.

This workshop is the first step for a study that aims to engage African neuroscience experts—including scientists, mental health clinicians, ethicists, policymakers, and traditional healers—through a structured deliberation process to identify ethical challenges in the field. The goal is to develop culturally sensitive ethical guidelines that reflect African perspectives, ensuring that neuroscience research and neurotechnological advancements benefit all communities equitably. This research will provide critical insights for shaping policy and practice for neuroscience in Africa.

This workshop is supported by the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) through the African Postdoctoral Training Initiative (APTI) programme and the Aga Khan University, Brain and Mind Institute.
