Overview

The African Academy of Sciences (AAS), in collaboration with partners, will convene the Africa Semiconductor Investors Forum, a high-level platform aimed at advancing Africa’s position in the global semiconductor value chain.

Held under the theme “From the Ground Up: Africa’s Minerals-to-Microchips Moment,” the forum highlights the continent’s unique opportunity to leverage its vast reserves of critical minerals and growing innovation capacity to transition from raw material extraction to high-value semiconductor design, manufacturing, and commercialization.

Amid shifting global supply chains and increasing demand for resilient and diversified production ecosystems, the forum will bring together policymakers, investors, industry leaders, and research institutions to explore strategic pathways for building a robust and inclusive semiconductor ecosystem in Africa. Discussions will focus on investment mobilisation, policy alignment, infrastructure development, and strengthening linkages between research, innovation, and industry.

Participants will also engage with investment-ready projects spanning the semiconductor value chain—from mineral processing and materials development to chip design, fabrication, and advanced packaging and testing—while advancing coordinated continental efforts to drive sustainable growth and global competitiveness.

Objective

To mobilise investment, partnerships, and policy coordination required to accelerate the development of Africa’s semiconductor ecosystem and position the continent as a competitive and sustainable player in the global microelectronics industry.

Expected Outcomes

  • Increased investment commitments for semiconductor infrastructure and innovation projects
  • Development of coordinated financing mechanisms, including blended finance models
  • Strengthened policy alignment to support semiconductor industry growth across African countries
  • Enhanced public–private partnerships linking government, academia, and industry
  • Establishment of follow-up coordination mechanisms to drive implementation of Africa’s semiconductor roadmap
