Biography

Dr. Amanuel Abajobir is an accomplished early to mid-career researcher who works as an Associate Research Scientist at the African Population and Health Research Center. He is particularly interested in research that focusses on understanding structural inequalities in access to maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) services and interventions to enhance access to quality MNCH services in underserved and marginalised settings, such as urban informal settlements and hard-to-reach rural or arid areas, as well as socioeconomic determinants of health and disease in Africa. For over a decade, he has extensively worked on MNCH research that has informed policy and practice and that is widely published and cited. He has authored blogs and policy briefs on important public health topics, such as COVID-19 and its impact on MNCH in the context of Africa. Moreover, he is featured in the book, #YouthCan, which is a collection of powerful, inspirational and challenging stories of youth breaking barriers across Africa. He also contributes to stakeholder engagements for MNCH research policy and programme prioritisation agendas for Africa. In recognition of his contributions, Amanuel has received prestigious academic awards, including International Postgraduate Research Scholarships and The University of Queensland Centennial Scholarship, two Young Public Health Research Awards by Ethiopian Public Health Association and its affiliates, and Ethiopian Public Health Officers Association and its affiliates, respectively. He strives to advance his career as a researcher by building an MNCH research programme that would not only generate rigorous research to advance MNCH but that would also nurture the growth of young scholars interested in this area.   He was elected as an AAS Fellow in recognition of his scientific contributions to MNCH research and his aspiration to lead and generate impactful evidence for inclusive societal wellbeing in Africa.
